Donald Trump says Meghan Markle is taking media attention ‘very personally’

Donald Trump has said the Duchess of Sussex is taking the media attention “very personally” after she opened up about difficulties she has faced as a royal.

The US President said she was taking the press coverage “very, very personally”, telling LBC on Thursday: “You have to be a little bit different than that.”

During a wide-ranging interview with Nigel Farage, Mr Trump praised the Queen, the Prince of Wales and Meghan’s husband the Duke of Sussex, saying the Royal Family are “really special people”.

Mr Farage brought up Meghan in light of the duchess having recently admitted that she has found life “a struggle” since marrying Prince Harry.

Mr Trump was asked if he feels sorry for Meghan “given what the press are saying about her”.

The President replied: “Well I’ve been watching her interviews, and I’ve seen it and she’s taking it very personally.

“I guess you have to be a little bit different than that. But she takes it very, very personally, and I can understand it.

“But I don’t know her. I will say I met Harry. He’s great. I met him when I was over.”

Meghan appeared alongside Harry in the ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, where she described her past year as a member of the Royal Family as “hard”.

She said she tried to cope with the pressures of her new life since marrying Harry in May 2018 by putting on a “stiff upper lip”.

But she said she was not prepared for the intensity of the tabloid interest.

Meghan has been a vocal critic of Mr Trump in the past and backed his political rival Hillary Clinton.

On the eve of his state visit to the UK, Mr Trump denied calling the duchess “nasty”.

Before the 2016 presidential election, Meghan suggested she would leave the US if former reality TV star Mr Trump won.

In an interview with The Sun newspaper, Mr Trump claimed he was unaware of Meghan’s comments and allegedly said: “I didn’t know that. What can I say? I didn’t know that she was nasty.” 

But in a tweet, the president denied making the comment, saying: “I never called Meghan Markle ‘nasty’. Made up by the Fake News Media, and they got caught cold!”

In his LBC interview, Mr Trump said of the Queen and her son: “She’s a great woman. I say that very seldom. I don’t say that often, I have to say, about anybody.

“But she is really very outstanding, and Prince Charles, so good, so good. He loves the environment. He loves your country so much.

“We had a great time, we’ll get together. Really special people.”
