President Trump told business and political leaders at the exclusive forum to reject “predictions of apocalypse” as he promoted his desire for a trade deal with the UK.

“We look forward to negotiating a tremendous new deal with the United Kingdom, who have a wonderful new Prime Minister, who very much wants to make a deal,” he said.

The two leaders want to strike the agreement before July, to ensure it isn’t derailed by the US presidential election which kick off later this year.

Mr Johnson and President Trump have had a close relationship with the two holding talks during the NATO summit last year, despite Tory campaign bosses calling the President “toxic”.

The White House has accused the UK of delaying an agreement between the two nations, with the government failing to publish its formal negotiating objective for the deal – the first step in the process.

The US made theirs public in February last year.

President Trump’s hopeful comments on the US-UK trade deal come as European officials have started dragging their feet on a post-Brexit deal with the UK.

Boris Johnson’s top aide Dominic Cummings has warned that Brussels has not “woken up” to Britain’s negotiating position, as he assured advisers there would be no further extensions.
