Piers Morgan has led celebrity reactions as President Donald Trump announced that he had tested positive for coronavirus, along with wife Melania.

In a message shared earlier this morning, Trump penned: ‘Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19.

‘We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!’

And Piers took aim at those who had made light of the 74-year-old’s health battles – after he previously downplayed the pandemic and refused to wear a face mask.

‘Interesting to see those who’ve spent the last few years screaming that Trump’s an uncaring, heartless empathy-devoid b*stard now spewing their gleeful joy that he & his wife have a deadly virus,’ the Good Morning Britain host tweeted.

‘They’re no better than the man they loathe.’

When a follower suggested that the ‘terrible mess’ America was in over their reaction to the pandemic was the President’s fault, he added: ‘Nobody’s been more critical of Trump over Covid than me.

‘But I don’t want him or his wife to die from it. Those who do are despicable.’

Alyssa Milano – who was previously diagnosed with coronavirus – took the opportunity to remind fans to ‘wear a mask’.

‘As someone who has had #COVID19 and still suffers from post-covid syndrome, I can honestly say with all that I am that I wouldn’t wish this virus on my worst enemy,’ she tweeted.

‘Please wear a mask.’

While Billy Eichner condemned Trump for continuing to work even when he knew he was exposed to the virus – as top aide Hope Hicks tested positive shortly before.

‘He went to a fundraiser with his own supporters without a mask knowing he was exposed. I can’t get over it,’ he posted.

‘2020 is that b***h a** gift that keeps on giving! Trump got on tv mask shaming Biden and defending his “covid jokes” and now Trump and Melania have covid! You can’t make this stuff up,’ Todrick Hall said.

Patricia Arquette commented: ‘They will have access to every medical support and intervention imaginable.

‘I just hope I don’t have to hear later “it’s just a bad flu”.’

As Cardi B simply added: ‘“BET YOU WANNA” wear a mask now.’

Mr Trump earlier said he and his wife, 50, were self-isolating after his aide, Hope, tested positive on Thursday – hours after she travelled with him on Air Force One to the Tuesday’s presidential debate with Joe Biden.

He later tweeted to confirm he and Melania were in quarantine, writing: ‘Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible!

‘The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!’

The news means the President will have to scrap Friday’s plans for a fundraiser, and a political rally, while he quarantines for two weeks.

His illness comes at a critical time for Mr Trump, who will come out of quarantine with just weeks to go until the November 3 election.

It is not clear how this will affect the second presidential debate, which is currently scheduled for 15 October in Miami.
