Arteta responds to being named September’s manager of the month

With Arsenal’s squad overhaul set to continue in the January transfer window, one name thought to be rising up their list of targets is Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

A striker will certainly be needed with Alexandre Lacazette set to depart at the end of the season and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also entering the final two years of his deal.

Aside from the north London derby, the Gunners’ attack has prompted some concern, with Mikel Arteta’s side having scored just twice outside of the win over Tottenham.

It is not a situation that many expected when Arteta was appointed, with the Spaniard brought in to bring the type of progressive football that his mentor Pep Guardiola uses at Manchester City.

Arteta has several options at his disposal up-front, with Florian Balogun and Eddie Nketiah joining Aubameyang and Lacazette in the striker ranks.

But with all four failing to fire, it could be time for Arsenal to breathe new life into their options in attack.

The man many expect to top their transfer shortlist in that position is Calvert-Lewin, who has developed into one of the Premier League’s best strikers at Everton.

He scored 21 goals for the Toffees in all competitions last season and has started this campaign in a similar vein.

Should Arsenal make a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin? Comment below.

Though he is currently out injured with a fractured toe, he was on the scoresheet in all of Everton’s opening three league games.

His goals helped them to wins over Southampton and Brighton, as well as a draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

The 24-year-old will have three years left on his current contract by the end of the season so will command a high fee.

But it is a fee that Arsenal should seriously consider paying, as it would both hand Arteta a regular goalscorer and give him a serious plan B.

Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have failed to fire for Arsenal

While the Gunners do look to dominate possession, that is not always possible and, in those situations, Arteta’s side have struggled.

But signing Calvert-Lewin would solve that problem immediately, with his height and strength making him the perfect target man.

In fact, the Everton star scored the second-most headed goals in Europe’s top five leagues last season.

That is especially important given the fact that Arsenal attempted the third-most crosses of any team in the top-flight last season, but lacked a target man to capitalise on that.

One of the reasons for his inclusion in the England squad for Euro 2020 was the fact that he could provide a different type of threat to Harry Kane.

With Lacazette almost certain to depart at the end of his deal and Nketiah also likely to exit, a space will open up for at least one forward in Arteta’s squad.

That is a space that should be taken by Calvert-Lewin, who has excelled at Everton and can provide Arsenal with the type of threat they have been missing since Olivier Giroud joined Chelsea.
