A dog has taken on a goat in a fierce competition to become the honorary mayor of an American town.

Lincoln the Nubian goat won the post last year in Fair Haven, Vermont, after the town manager thought up a pet mayor election to raise money for a new playground.

However, a second term for the incumbent mayor has been put in jeopardy after police dog Sammy was put up as a candidate for the 2020 election.

Both animals are said to be popular in the town, so the race is on for voting day on March 3.

Town manager Joe Gunter says the honorary town mayor’s responsibilities will include marching in parades, managing the playground fund and occasionally meeting with the Board of Selectmen to ‘keep an eye on them’.

In order to cast their ballot, residents must donate $1 to raise funds to rehabilitate a community playground and to get kids involved in community affairs.

Mum Sharai Thayer says she wants German Shepherd Sammy – who is trained in tracking drugs – to win the role of mayor as her children love her visits at school.

She told NBC News: ‘We’re definitely look more forward to Sammy winning the race.

‘The friendly canine sits at the school when the kids are going in and out and even goes through the halls.’

However, Fair Haven resident Cheryl Daviau has sparked hope for Lincoln by saying granddaughter had her picture taken with the goat mayor and loved it.

Fair Haven has raised about $10,000 of donations of the $80,000 needed for the playground so far.
