Once a lovable teenage witch with a talking cat, Sabrina Spellman’s recent reincarnation. Now, having gone through with her ‘dark baptism’, the second series of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is about to get a lot darker.
The trailer, released by Netflix, opens with the young witch pouring what looks like gas on the floor of her once beloved mortal school, Baxter High, before lighting a match. While we don’t get to see whether she actually sets the school on fire, the very thought of it shows us that this season will be nothing like the last.
‘I feel like I’ve been walking down this darker path,’ says Sabrina’s voice over, confirming our suspicions that she has moved closer to the spookier side of her life.
Scenes of her attacking people in the woods, bathing in what looks like blood and being presented with a bloody heart all go some way to suggesting that Sabrina the teenage witch has well and truly grown up.
Fans of the show have been waiting for Sabrina to go to the dark side of witchcraft for a while, it seems her aunts and teacher may not share their enthusiasm. ‘Something is different about Sabrina,’ we hear Aunt Hilda say, in an even more worrisome tone than usual, while her teacher Madam Satan (not a very subtle name for a rather suspicious witch) warns ‘she had a dark baptism. There’s nothing we can do to stop her.’
The new trailer confirms that most of the original cast will be returning for the second season, including both of Sabrina’s love interests – harmless mortal Harvey and dangerous, sexy warlock Nicholas. Though with all the kissing happening within the walls of Sabrina’s new school, the Academy of the Unseen Arts, it looks like Harvey doesn’t get a look in edge ways.
The brilliantly sassy and evil Weird Sisters are back too, as well as Sabrina’s more likeable mortal friends Roz and Susie. It also looks like Ambrose – Sabrina’s pansexual housebound cousin – will continue his partying ways
Perhaps most excitingly though, is the new character we’re introduced to right at the end of almost two-minute trailer. ‘You have loved the power I have given you,’ he tells Sabrina from the head of a lavish, long table topped with what looks like a feast of vegetables. He has the power to move the chair Sabrina sits in with just a flick of his fingers, and judging from his red, silky shirt and the sinful look in his eye, all signs are pointing towards this being the actual devil…
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part II launches globally on Netflix on 4 April.
