Doctor Who plot hole: ‘I didn’t question it’ The Master star exposes huge inconsistency

The Master’s (played by Sacha Dhawan) return was the first of many time-stopping plot twists to air over the course of the twelfth season of Doctor Who. Having battled with the Time Lord (Jodie Whittaker) many times before, the villain has made himself one of the Gallifreyan’s greatest foes. However, the latest incarnation of the menacing character left many viewers scratching their heads as to how a comeback was possible, given the last time the menace was seen, Missy (Michelle Gomez) was killed off. Now, the newcomer to the role has spoke out about the plot hole of the BBC sic-hit drama.

During the first episode of the twelfth season, The Master was up to his old ricks as he duped his fellow Time Lord into a death-defying situation, which left her companions Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cloe) and Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh) in mortal peril.

However, the Gallifreyan was steps ahead as a future version of herself managed to send clues back to the past on how her friends could fight to live another day.

By the end of the two-parter, the Doctor had managed to scupper her enemies plans and sent him into an abyss, only for a pre-recorded message delivered by the TARDIS to reveal the villain had destroyed their home planet of Gallifrey.

Just before the most recent episode ended, the heroes arch-rival made yet another unexpected appearance as he had seemingly escaped his holding, but the comeback has made fans question how indeed any of this is possible.

During one of the last episodes of the twelfth Doctor’s time at the helm of the TARDIS, the first-ever female incarnation of The Master – or Missy – was killed off as she lost the ability to regenerate.

This came after she battled her former self in the version of John Simm, 49, as she began to side with her rival and wanted to do good instead of bad.

Following her death, there was no inclination given as to how The Master could ever return and yet it’s happened with newcomer Sacha in the role.

It doesn’t seem viewer’s questions are going to be answered either as the actor has explained even he doesn’t know his character is alive.

Longtime fans of the show will remember the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) believed he had fought his last battle with The Master way before the series was revived back in 2005.

The Time Lord’s nemesis had even made himself forget who he was to hide from the Time War, posing as Professor Yana (Derek Jacobi) during the programme’s third revamped season.

His true form as the villain was finally uncovered during an episode called Utopia when Yana pressed a device which meant all his memories came flooding back to him.

This was similar to how the second-ever incarnation of the Doctor realised she was a Time Lord this season, when seemingly human tour operator Ruth Clayton (Joe Martin) was revealed to be a previously unmentioned incarnation of the Galifreyan.

Former showrunner Steven Moffat has also explained there is no reason for viewers to learn what has brought The Master back to life.

The former sci-fi series boss told Radio Times: “I don’t necessarily want all the gaps to be plugged, kids out there are making up their own stories about how Missy escaped that place and regenerated into Sacha.

“They’re doing their own version of it. And that’s much more exciting to me than actually filling all those gaps.”

With the villain sure to play a pertinent part in the season 12 finale, there are sure to be more questions than answers left in the mind of viewers as to the mystery behind this shady character.

Doctor Who concludes tonight at 6:50pm on BBC One.
