Disney's Jungle Cruise trailer: Our first look at Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt's adventure

Take Hollywood classic The African Queen and mix it up with a bit of Indiana Jones (and perhaps a touch of Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser’s 1999 version of The Mummy) and you’ll probably end up with Disney’s upcoming action adventure, Jungle Cruise.

The first trailer has just dropped for Jaume Collet-Serra’s movie, which is the latest movie to be based on a Disney theme park attraction.

The movie casts Blunt as Lily Houghton, a scientist in the early 20th century hunting for a magical healing tree in the deep Amazon. To get her there, she hires Dwayne Johnson’s riverboat captain and charming scoundrel Frank, who makes a living conning credulous tourists with the help of the locals.

Jack Whitehall plays Lily’s younger brother McGregor. There was a minor scandal around his character when it was rumoured that he would play Disney’s first openly LGBTQ+ movie character as an effeminate gay man. Those rumours about his character have been in no way substantiated by Disney, although it is interesting to note that he has no lines in this trailer.

Édgar Ramírez will play an enigmatic villain who looks to have a thing for armour and snakes. That’s quite a combination.

Disney has had extremely mixed success on movies based on its attractions. Despite diminishing returns on later outings, Pirates Of The Caribbean remains one of its most success franchises. However, 2015’s George Clooney-starring Tomorrowland was a high-profile critical and financial flop.

Jungle Cruise will be released on 24 July, 2020.
