Disney’s Frozen 2 sets stunning Thanksgiving box office record with $123.7 million, icing rivals

Disney’s Frozen 2 stuffed Thanksgiving box office receipts, making $85.2 million over the weekend and a record-setting $123.7 million over the five-day holiday.

The animated adventure soared past the previous Thanksgiving benchmark held by 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and its $109 million bounty between the Wednesday and Sunday holiday frame.

After two weekends in theaters, Frozen 2 has earned a massive $287 million – a new high for Disney Animation.

Audiences just can’t get enough of princesses Anna and Elsa, played by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, who leave Arendelle with pals Kristoff, Olaf and Sven to find the origin of Elsa’s powers to save their kingdom.

Coming in at No. 2, director Rian Johnson’s murder mystery, Knives Out, carved itself $27 million over the weekend and $41.7 million between Wednesday and Sunday.

Starring Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis and Chris Evans, it beat its projected earnings of $20 million to $25 million in its first five days of release. The crowd please cost $40 million to make.

That propelled its domestic tally to $81 million after three weeks on release.

Feel-good movie A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers made $12 million over the traditional weekend and $17.6 million over the holidays for fourth place.

After two weeks on release, the movie about beloved children’s TV host Fred Rogers has generated $34 million.

Meanwhile, another new release, romantic drama Queen & Slim nabbed fifth place collecting $11.7 million over the weekend and $15.8 million over the five-day holiday period.

Directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe, it stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith and has an estimated budget of $20 million.
