Disney+ sets new UK launch date and reveals pricing

Disney+ will now launch in the UK on 24th March, which is a week earlier than previously announced. If you’re tempted by it, the beefy new streaming service will set you back either £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year, and will replace the cheaper DisneyLife platform entirely.

Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland will join the UK in getting Disney+ slightly earlier, but Belgium, Portugal and some Nordic countries will still have to wait until the summer for it.

No official reason has been given for the new launch date.

Disney+ first sprang to life over in the US and Canada last November and became an instant success, boasting a new live-action Star Wars series from Iron Man director Jon Favreau, called The Mandalorian.

“The UK price was predictable given the aggressive US charge and the trend of a race to the bottom in terms of price – none of these services are going to make money for years,” Tom Harrington at Enders Analysis explained to the BBC when the news broke, adding that maybe Disney wanted “to get The Mandalorian out there before even more people pirate it.”

By a week?! That ship has surely sailed, m’dudes.

Disney+ will give subscribers access to Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and National Geographic content, and also includes extensive access to some of its recently-acquired Fox back catalogue, like The Simpsons.

Last December, it was revealed that Disney had been clawing back more than half its TV box sets from UK streamer Sky Now, including ABC series Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, and reducing its Sky offerings from 99 shows in April to just 45 by October.

Some DisneyLife subscribers who are considering taking up Disney+ are keen on the idea of a much-improved interface and the availability of 4K resolution on the service, and Disney+’s upcoming Marvel TV series are also waiting in the wings, including a Falcon and Winter Soldier spinoff, a Loki show starring Tom Hiddleston, and even more projects further afield, like Ms Marvel and Moon Knight.
