Gareth Arnold, who worked in communications for the Independent MP, took over Mr O’Mara’s Twitter account to announce he was resigning as a member of his staff. The former employee went off on a rant, calling his former employer a “selfish, degenerate pr*ck”, before announcing his resignation. Mr Arnold has since tweeted on his personal account to claim the Labour MP hasn’t even noticed the damning comments.
Mr O’Mara became notorious when he quit the Labour Party in 2018 after being suspended following a string of misogynistic and homophobic comments he made online.
Since his resignation in 2018, the 37-year-old has served as an Independent MP.
He plans to stand for re-election at the next general election but the former staffer has claimed Mr O’Mara has let his constituents down.
He said: “You do not care about your constituents.
“You do not care about anyone but yourself.”
When explaining his resignation, Mr Arnold said: “I cannot and will not defend you and your vile, inexcusable contempt for the people who voted you in. You selfish, degenerate pr*ck.”
He continued: “Sheffield Hallam deserves so much better than you.
“You have wasted opportunities which people dare not to even dream of.”
The shocking resignation has caused quite a stir on Twitter, with the first tweet in the thread reaching over 15,000 interactions.
Mr Arnold continued to attack the MP on his personal Twitter account.
He even said Mr O’Mara has not even noticed the scandalous tweets, and said: “He has just messaged me and he pays that little attention to anything that he’s not even seen the tweet all of his constituents have. Unbelievable.”
The former staff member also claimed Mr O’Mara will struggle to delete the tweets he posted, as he will require access to Mr Arnold’s phone.
He said: “So, just remembered he needs my phone to login to his Twitter.
“Sh*t. Sorry mate. Consider it payback for all the nonsense I said to people defending you.”
The tweets were posted over an hour ago, and can still be seen on Mr O’Mara’s Twitter account.
Following the Twitter thread, one user has even floated the idea the Mr Arnold applied for for the job as Comms officer for the sole purpose of pranking him.
They claimed the Twitter stunt is an “elaborate prank to try to force a by-election in Sheffield Hallam” and cited quotes from Mr Arnold’s Wikipedia page where it states: “Arnold was interviewed and filmed as part of a BBC Three investigative documentary into online trolling presented by YouTube beauty vlogger Em Ford and technology journalist David McClelland. “Arnold spoke how trolling can be a force for positive social change.”
The Twitter user added: “Looks like a hoaxter may have actually applied for and got the job as his comms officer just to prank him a month later.”
Mr Arnold continues to Tweet about his decision to publicly resign, and said: “All I want is for Sheffield Hallam to have an MP that cares about them.”
He said: “Was it the best way to go about it? Well, I’ll find out.
“Did I exhaust every single avenue possible before I did it? Yes, for many weeks.
“It’s not fair on the people who have serious casework who need help and it’s not fair on Sheffield Hallam.”
