Disease-carrying killer mosquitoes are on their way to the UK

Deadly disease-carrying mosquitos will swarm the UK in a decade due to global warming, a study shows.

Summer months will see the arrival of the insects, which spread illnesses such as the Zika virus and dengue fever.

Outbreaks common in Africa and Asia will happen here as Britain gets warmer and wetter. Scientists mapped the spread of two of the worst disease carriers.

They found by 2030, they are likely to be common as far north as the Midlands. By 2050, they are projected to be throughout all of England and Wales.

Lead author Dr Sadie Ryan, of the University of Florida, said: “These diseases, which we think of as strictly tropical, have been showing up already in areas with suitable climates.

“Humans are very good at moving both bugs and their pathogens around the globe

“The risk of disease transmission is a serious problem, even over the next few decades.

“Places like Europe and North America that used to be too cold for the viruses will face new diseases like dengue.”

It comes as a UN report said the planet is experiencing record sea level rises and devastating floods, storms and heat waves due to climate change.

UN secretary general Antonio Guterres warned “there is no longer any time for delay” on tackling rising greenhouse gas emissions.
