Dior Haute Couture set the tone for Spring Summer's biggest makeup trend

From feathered brows to all things glitter and glow, many of our favourite beauty trends can find their origins in Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

The bi-annual event showcases the finest in fashion design, breathtaking craftsmanship and, of course, trailblazing beauty looks – and is widely considered to be the most exclusive occasion in the fashion calendar. Here, GLAMOUR’s beauty editor, Lottie Winter, goes backstage at Dior Haute Couture Spring Summer 2020 to catch up with Peter Philips, creative and image director of Dior Makeup, to discuss the makeup trends set to define the year ahead, as well as a retrospective on the best beauty in couture history.

Graphic, gold eyeliner is a strong but subtle statement

For this season’s look, we decided on a double-winged eyeliner with a golden separation in between the two lines. It’s quietly confident makeup – a strong statement but somehow also subtle. We used Diorshow On Stage Liner in Matte Black, and the Dior Backstage Custom Eye Palette with the gold pigment combined with the clear gel. The combination of the two gives a much more powerful finish on the skin.

Makeup and beauty is all about strength and doing whatever it takes for people to recognise that you are a strong woman. For some women it’s a punchy red lipstick, for others it’s no makeup at all. For me, real beauty is using whatever tool you can to help you express yourself and show your strength. That’s what I try to do with all the looks I create at couture.

“Naturality is the name of the game”

When the eyes are making the statement, it’s nice to keep the skin looking natural. Prep is really important to make sure the skin looks healthy so I used the Dior Hydra Life range which contains Mallow to boost hydration and the Dior Lip Scrub to get rid of any chapped skin on the lips.

Then it was either the Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation or the new Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer – other than that, it was totally paired back. I think the extreme glow and the extreme contour and highlight is past its peak. We are able to tone it down and make it wearable now. People learn from mistakes and you have to cross the line in order to know the boundaries – I mean, look at the eighties! The crimped hair, shoulder pads, blue shadow. I’m looking forward to a paired down contour and glow.
