It’s a classic Gen Z/Millennial trope. You know when you visit a new city, absolutely fall in love with it and then have to fight the urge to say: ‘Yeah, I could live here. Should I move here?’

Consider us guilty.

With the housing market the way it is in the UK, owning a home feels out of reach for many. Plus, with rent continuing to rise, it’s only natural to look elsewhere and even toy with the idea of a digital nomad lifestyle – right?

But this is a reality for many, as international migration has steadily increased over the last three decades, with an estimated 281 million people living in a country other than their birth in 2020. In 1990, this figure represented 128 million – the equivalent of 3.6% of the total global population.

Now, a new study from financial services provider Remitly has revealed the cities around the world that people dream about moving to the most.

Analysing the total Google search volumes for the phrase ‘move to [city]’ for 164 countries across the world, the organisation was able to definitively say which cities are lusted after the most.

However, the number one destination might come as a shock –and nope, it’s not London or New York.

With its ultramodern architecture, sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife and abundant employment opportunities, Dubai takes the top spot. In fact, between 2022 and 2023, this city’s population increased by nearly 100,000.

Next up is the glitzy Miami, a city with a laidback, coastal vibe that represents Florida’s second-most populous city (after Jacksonville, as per the 2020 census).

The oh-so-chic French capital city, Paris, follows in third place, with the effortlessly cool New York City, Madrid and Singapore coming next in joint fourth.

Here we have it: London is in joint fifth place, alongside the chocolate box city (literally – Guylian, anyone?) of Brussels in Belgium.

Elsewhere on the list you’ll find other US spots such as Washington DC, Chicago and Portland, alongside further afield destinations Buenos Aires and Bogota.

The top ten cities that people want to move to the most are as follows:

1. Dubai
2. Miami
3. Paris
4. New York City, Madrid, Singapore
7. London, Brussels
9. Toronto
10. Washington DC, Buenos Aires, Christchurch, Quebec City, Bogota, Portland, Vienna, Pheonix, Chicago
