Diego Maradona’s celebrity fans have paid tribute after the legendary football player died at the age of 60.
It was announced on Wednesday that the World Cup winner had died at his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Earlier in the month, Maradona had been hospitalised and undergone surgery after a blood clot on his brain.
Following the news of his death, his celebrity fans shared tributes to the sports star on social media.
Oasis star Liam Gallagher wrote: ‘Maradona GOAT rip LG x’ while politician Jeremy Corbyn added: ‘Rest in peace Diego Maradona. Football legend, voice for the voiceless and campaigner for the Left in Latin America.’
Boxing champion Mike Tyson shared: ‘The Hand of God, Maradona has left us. In 86 we both won our championships. They use to compare the two of us. He was one of my hero’s and a friend. I respected him so much. He will be greatly missed.’
Piers Morgan urged fans not to focus on Maradona’s past issues with alcohol and drugs and to remember him for his spectacular talent on the pitch.
He wrote: ‘I’m reading a lot of nonsense about the ‘tragedy’ of Diego Maradona. There was nothing tragic about him – he was one of the greatest sportsmen in history, beloved by millions, and lived his life to the full parameters of fun & craziness. He didn’t die wondering. Most do.’
Model Naomi Campbell shared a selection of photos of the footballer, as well as quotes from him: ‘“I am Maradona, who makes goals, who makes mistakes. I can take it all, I have shoulders big enough to fight with everybody.” “When God decides its time, I guess he’ll come for us.” “All the people that criticised me should eat their words.”’
Maradona is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time for his part in Argentina’s World Cup win in 1986.
The game is also famous for Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal which helped knock England out at the quarter-final stage as well as for dribbling from his own half, through England’s entire defence to score one of the most iconic goals in World Cup history.
Three days of national mourning have been announced in Argentina following the news of Maradona’s death, with Argentina’s president, Alberto Fernandez, saying: ‘You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all.
‘Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives.’
