Diego Godin explains why he turned down transfer offer from Man Utd

Inter Milan defender Diego Godin has confirmed he turned down a move to Manchester United last year because he wanted to see out his contract with Atletico Madrid.

The 33-year-old recently joined the Italian club on a free transfer after his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano expired.

It brought an end to his nine-year stay in the Spanish capital, which saw him make 389 appearances following his move from Villarreal in 2010.

However, he could have left Madrid in 2018, when then-United boss Jose Mourinho attempted to bring him to Old Trafford in an attempt to improve his defence.

The Uruguayan has since revealed that he turned down offers from both the Premier League club and Italian giants Juventus because he wanted to remain with Atletico.

Diego Godin turned down a move to Manchester United in 2018

“Yes, a year ago there were offers from Juventus, Manchester United, in the past also Man City,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“But at that moment I had a contract in force with Atletico, I didn’t think of leaving. This time [move to Inter] it was different, I was near the end of my contract.”

Godin enjoyed great success with Atletico and even helped the club to the La Liga title in 2014, ending Barcelona and Real Madrid’s dominance in the league.

He also helped Diego Simeone’s side to a Copa del Rey win in 2013, and two Europa League triumphs in 2012 and 2018.

Godin spent nine years with Atletico Madrid

The Uruguayan is now hoping to enjoy similar success in Italy, as Antonio Conte’s Inter side look to prevent Juventus lifting the Serie A trophy for the ninth successive year.

And he said that the club’s ambition was one of the things that attracted him to make the move to Italy.

“I can say that no club convinced me how Inter managed to,” Godin added.

“They came alive first and decidedly with more conviction than other clubs. They showed me the project: it’s ambitious, like me.

“And I liked the idea of being part of it and being able to help Inter realise it.”
