Did the award season FINALLY represent diversity at the Critics' Choice awards?

The award season rolls on, amidst controversy that some of the awards are not accurately representing the world we actually live in but at the Critics’ Choice Awards 2020, things seemed to finally be going in the right direction.

After the BAFTA awards 2020 were criticised for nominating all white actors in the four main acting categories, the Critics’ Choice Awards finally gave recognition to the Lupita Nyong’o horror movie, US awarding it the best sci-fi or horror movie award. Until this point, the film has been overlooked all the way through the award season.

When They See Us, the Netflix drama, directed by Ava DuVernay about a group of five black men who were wrongly convicted of rape, was also finally awarded during the award season circuit for Best Limited Series. One of the show’s stars, Jharrel Jerome, also won for leading actor in a drama series.

Meanwhile, after failing to get a Golden Globe nomination for her amazing work in Watchmen, where Regina starred as the first female black superhero on TV, the Oscar-winning actress Regina King won best actress in a drama series.

Greta Gerwig, who has been part of the controversy over award ceremonies’ inability to award female film directors, won Best Adapted Screenplay for Little Women, which goes some way in making up for the snubs she has been dealt all award season long.

Whilst these are steps in the right direction, there is still much to be done with none of the four main film acting categories featuring winners of colour despite Awkwafina’s historic win at the Golden Globe awards.
