Did My Chemical Romance predict the Chile protests way back in 2011?

My Chemical Romance sent shockwaves through the emo community as they confirmed their long-awaited comeback last week.

But now, they’re ruffling feathers for a different reason.

Fans have been speculating that the I’m Not Okay stars can see into the future, after an old tweet from the band seemed to predict the current protests in Chile.

The Simpsons, eat your heart out.

There are widespread protests in Chile demanding better social services and an end to economic inequality, sparked by the proposed introduction of a 3% rise in subway fares.

At least 20 people have died in the protests, with nearly 3,000 arrested over the past 22 days.

And My Chemical Romance – made up of Gerard and Mikey Way, Frank Iero and Ray Toro – seemingly saw the uprising coming.

On 14 January 2011, a post from the group’s official Twitter account read: ‘Hola Chile! Te amamos! Stay safe in 2019.’

MCR were on tour at the time for their Danger Days era, but didn’t play in Chile – so it’s quite strange they’d tweet such a message, and looks like the band knew something would be kicking off in Chile eight years on.

However, it may all just be a coincidence.

At the time of the tweet, there were protests in Magallanes, Chile, at the rise of natural gas prices – which is what the band may have meant with their ‘stay safe’ warning.

And as for the mention of 2019, that could have been a nod to the band’s fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

The ‘Killjoys’ of the album concept live in post-apocalyptic California in the year 2019 – so we wouldn’t start asking MCR for the lotto numbers just yet.

The Helena singers had us all crying mascara tears as they confirmed they are reuniting after six years away.

My Chemical Romance initially announced a one-off show in Los Angeles this December, but have now added three more dates, with shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Following the announcement of their LA gig, the Famous Last Words stars wrote on social media: ‘It is truly unbelievable to us the happiness we have experienced over the past two days. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the warm welcome back. We truly did not expect this. See you soon. Xoxo, MCR.’

We’re not ok. Trust us.
