With Spider-Man: Far from Home already in theaters ahead of the holiday weekend, it’s time to start dissecting the movie in order to see what we might be able to learn about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this case, we’re specifically asking, did the movie set up the Fantastic Four? It’s not a matter of if the characters will appear in the MCU, it’s a matter of when and a little something spotted in Spidey’s latest solo adventure may give us a clue.
Warning: spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home. We won’t be diving too deep into the plot, but we’re still discussing specific elements of the movie as they pertain to a new Fantastic Four movie, so those who haven’t seen it yet may want to turn back now. During the end of the movie when Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is swinging around the city on his way to M.J. (Zendaya), he lands in front of a familiar building. It’s the one that used to be Stark Tower before it became Avengers Tower. Now? It’s under construction.
Looking closely at the fence in this Far From Home Post-credit scene, which is guarding the construction zone, there is a sign that reads “We can’t wait to show you what comes next.” That alone could be a tease, but rather interestingly, the sentence is broken up with the numbers 1, 2 and 3. And right where a four would be, there is simply a question mark. So, putting that together, we have a teaser for something coming next and a number sequence leading to four? Are we grasping at straws here? Or is this a small tease that Marvel’s first family is making their way to the MCU?

One theory is that Avengers Tower will become the Baxter Building. In the comics, this serves as the home base for Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, aka the Fantastic Four. There was also a theory that it could end up being Oscorp HQ, which would open the door for quite a few possibilities. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked about the tower in a recent interview and played coy.
“I didn’t see a sign there yet. I always think the speculation fuels it, whether that speculation is correct, as it sometimes is, or if that speculation is wrong, as it often is.”
Here’s what we know for sure. With the Disney/Fox merger closing earlier this year, the character rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four are in the hands of Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige previously stated that it’s going to be some time before those characters are actually introduced. That said, there’s nothing preventing them from doing a little set up in the meantime, and that’s exactly what could be going on here. We’ve also heard rumors that Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed may be taking on the MCU’s eventual Fantastic Four movie but again, that’s only a rumor.
