Diablo Immortal release date news: Is it coming out before Diablo IV?

The Diablo Immortal announcement has been swept under the rug following the tone-deaf way the project was revealed. BlizzCon 2019 focused almost entirely on Diablo IV, with Diablo Immortal getting very little in the way of news during the Opening Ceremony. But Blizzard did share a few updates regarding the project, which is now very much overshadowed by Diablo IV.

The question now is whether the Diablo Immortal release date is coming in 2020, or if Blizzard decides to push it back further.

WHEN IS THE DIABLO IMMORTAL RELEASE DATE?

Diablo Immortal was announced by Blizzard during BlizzCon 2018 and suffered a major backlash from fans.

While many gamers would normally be interested in such a project, the timing left a lot to be desired, with fans more interested in news regarding Diablo IV.

Since then, Blizzard has remained coy on what they have planned for Diablo Immortal, past what we already know about it.

As revealed a few years ago, Diablo Immortal will be a mobile Massively Multiplayer Online Action RPG (MMOARPG) developed by Blizzard Entertainment in partnership with NetEase, coming exclusively to Android, iPhone and iPad.

We would expect it to be free-to-play, like most other mobile games launched for modern phones.

However, this is the latest update on how Blizzard plans to support Diablo Immortal following launch:

“We’re focused on building a great Diablo game first. That said, we know the business model is top of mind for lots of people out there and we’re taking the time to get it right.

“It’s too early to share details, but we want to make a Diablo game players love and to support it for years to come.

“We plan to achieve that by creating an ecosystem that accounts for and welcomes every type of player—from our most die-hard Diablo veterans to those who’ll be exploring Sanctuary for the first time.”

And how long will gamers have to wait until they can play Diablo Immortal on their mobile devices?

The bad news is that Blizzard will not put a release date on Diablo Immortal, leaving a lot to guesswork.

So far, gamers can only pre-register their interest in playing the game through upcoming beta tests.

And as far as we know, there have been no large scale open tests in Europe or North America.

“We don’t have a release date to announce at this time. It takes significant time to meet the Blizzard quality level we’re aiming for, and we have a lot of ambitious goals for Diablo Immortal. Keep a close eye on Diablo channels for upcoming news,” the latest message from Blizzard reads.

WILL DIABLO IMMORTAL RELEASE BEFORE DIABLO IV?

While there is no guarantee of this happening, we would be surprised at waiting years to play Diablo Immortal.

The negative feedback from the original announcement may have held back the project, or even changed some of the initials plans for it.

And this may have led to Blizzard pushing back its plans for Diablo Immortal. But Diablo IV looks a lot further out and that should mean Immortal news in 2020.

So far, Diablo 4 has been confirmed for PS4, Xbox One and PC, with no current talk of Switch support.

But with the PS5 and Xbox Series X launching at the end of 2020, surely this means that Diablo IV will be featured on those systems too?

For now, Blizzard is sticking to their guns and saying that Diablo 4 is only planned for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

When asked about announcing Diablo 4 with new consoles being planned for the near future, Blizzard devs Joe Shely and Tiffany Wat offered some insight into the situation

Q: When it comes to announcing a game in 2019, it can put you in a strange position, especially with the changes to hardware in 2020. Is the team prepared for those new systems coming out?

Tiffany Wat: “Yeah actually, if you remember when we released Ultimate Evil Edition, so originally when we released Diablo 3 console it was on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and when we released Ultimate Evil Edition it was around the timeline when we were moving to the newer generation of consoles.

“And it was released on all four, so we’re definitely taking a look at what’s coming and we stay abreast of all the information in the industry, but right now, it’s just for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.”

For now, we would expect things to stay quiet regarding Diablo IV and for some news regarding Diablo Immortal sometime before BlizzCon 2020.
