Develop:Brighton’s attendance grew by a record 21% this year

Tandem Events has revealed Develop:Brighton 2019 was attended by more industry professionals than ever before, with attendance up a record-breaking 21 per cent year-on-year. The event welcomed 2871 delegates across 100+ sessions and ten tracks at the conference, as well as 2,800+ additional meetings that were additionally set up through the bespoke Meet@Develop meeting scheduler.

With keynote speeches from Frontier Developments CEO David Braben, Media Molecule, Hello Games’ Sean Murray, and Rebellion founders Jason and Chris Kingsley, Develop:Brighton’s three-day conference and expo ran earlier this month at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, with the accompanying Develop:Star Awards taking place on July 10th.

“It doesn’t take a lot of convincing to get developers to head down to the beach in the summer, but this year’s Develop:Brighton conference felt busier and more electric than I’ve ever seen it,” said Haley Uyrus, marketing and communications manager at Mediatonic.

“We certainly felt everyone’s excitement and enthusiasm upstairs at our Mediatonic ‘Tonic Terrace’ as people stopped to chat between talks and the Expo – it was a great feeling to all be together in Brighton for a few days.”

“We’d like to thank all our attendees, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors for making Develop:Brighton 2019 such a success,” added Tandem Events managing director, Andy Lane. “This year we welcomed more people, hosted more sessions and enjoyed more ice cream than ever before!

“Our delegates belong to a tight-knit community that relishes the opportunity to come together every summer to talk about the issues affecting the industry, to network and to learn from one another.”

Develop:Brighton will return to the Hilton Brighton Metropole from Tuesday 14th to Thursday 16th July, 2020. The call for speakers is expected to open in January 2020.

The Develop:Star Awards took place on July 10th. Designed to “recognise the very best of the game development community” and celebrate the achievements of developers and their games across 15 categories, the big winners this year included Weather Factory – which picked up three awards for Best Micro Studio, Best Games Design, and Best Innovation – and Sumo Digital, which picked up Best Studio. Game of the Year went to Overcooked! 2 whilst Old School Runescape Mobile secured Best Mobile Game.

Amiqus received the 2019 Recruitment Star award and Curve Digital picked up this year’s Publishing Star prize, whilst the ultimate Develop Star award – which is given to an “extraordinary game developer” for outstanding achievement and contribution to the industry – went to Hello Games’ Sean Murray.
