Desperate Smash Bros. fans uncover ‘hints’ for new DLC character

A number of fans have come together over some outlandish theories for the unannounced fifth DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

It may be a new year but the excitement over the potential next character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hasn’t changed. Many suspected that we’d see something announced at the most recent Game Awards, but they came and went without so much as a mention of Smash.

With no concrete info and not even word on when they’ll be revealed, fans have become desperate and begun to comb through director Masahiro Sakurai’s own Twitter account, believing that the in-game images he’s been sharing contain hints to the next fighter’s identity.

Sakurai has regularly uploaded these pictures since 26 December, which he personally took and even shared with his team as part of daily reports. According to Google Translate, the below Tweet reads ‘During the development of [Super Smash Bros. Ultimate], I kept raising the images under development once a day in the daily report released to the team. It continues all the time. I’d like to upload this image at random once a day for a while. You may use the debugging function for shooting, but please pardon!’

While the pictures range from comedic to fascinating, fans have delved deeper into them, and have spotted a few of them that seem to reference other titles. YouTuber PapaGenos posted a graphic to their own Twitter, highlighting three images in particular that they believe indicate potential candidates for the fifth DLC. In fact, these three have been among some of the most demanded characters to be included – Arle from Puyo Puyo, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, and KOS-MOS from Xenosaga.

PapaGenos does admit that they could be reaching with this, but considering the Tweet currently has over 1.4K likes, a lot of people either believe or want to believe it’s valid.

Given how accurate the comparisons are, it’s more than likely that Sakurai is intentionally making these references, but that doesn’t mean that any of these characters are in the running to be DLC. After all, during the run-up to Ultimate’s release, another in-game image that resembled a battle from role-playing game Golden Sun had fans convinced that its hero Isaac would be made playable, only for him to be included as an Assist Trophy.

For now, it’s best to keep expectations in check and wait patiently and remember that while the next character is the last addition for the game’s Fighters Pass, there are still plans for further DLC characters to be released.
