Descendants 3 review: The final chapter of the fantasy tale sees enemies become allies to seal the fate of the Villain Kids

Descendants 3 is the final installment in the Disney original movie franchise, and is a fittingly touching end to the series, which tests the loyalty and integrity of the characters we’ve come to know and love.

Following on from Descendants 2 via a high-energy dance number to kick things off (because of course there is), the four protagonists choose four more lucky Villain Kids to join them to live in Auradon.

Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson and Booboo Stewart return as the four lead characters Mal, Carlos, Evie and Jay, who select the latest kids that are going to cross the barrier with them.

As they bring them through the portal between the two worlds, Mal has to go head to head with Hades – and the truth behind their connection is finally revealed.

Due to the breach in security, Mal has to make the decision whether to shut the barrier and stop any more of the VK coming across to Auradon – but this also means everyone who has since come over can no longer return to see their friends or family either.

Obviously, this doesn’t go down too well with people on either side of the barrier, and Mal is left in a quandary over what to do as Queen.

Add to this the fact that Audrey decides to go all ‘bad guy’ on us by commandeering Maleficent’s sceptre, and Mal has to decide whether to team up with Uma in order to combine their powers and defeat Audrey, and alliances truly are tested in the third installment.

As well as being the last film in the Descendants franchise, the TV movie is also one of the last projects to star Cameron Boyce, being released after his tragic death due to a seizure caused by epilepsy in July.

While Cameron gets to showcase his charm and dance moves, fans may be surprised not to see more of the late actor in this movie, which largely focuses on Mal and Audrey.

All hugely talented singers and dancers, the movie is carried on the epic dance numbers – no surprise then that the film was directed by Kenny Ortega.

The final movie in the trilogy about the kids of Disney villains leaves viewers on a high thanks to the irresistibly catchy song and dance numbers, as well as the conquering of good over evil in the end.

Originally released in the USA in August, Descendants 3 will be available to UK viewers next month. The American debut saw over 8.4 million viewers tune in to find out the fate of the four protagonists in the conclusion to the hugely popular series.

Descendants 3 will arrive on the Disney Channel in the UK on 11 October at 5.30pm.
