Frank Lampard will hold further talks with Chelsea in the next 48 hours after being excused from reporting back to pre-season training by his club Derby County.

The Rams confirmed last week that they had given Lampard permission to speak to the Blues about the vacant managerial position at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard is believed to be keen on a return to his former club but he’s seeking assurances from Chelsea’s board that he will be given time due to the Blues’ two-window transfer ban.

Chelsea’s new Technical and Performance advisor Petr Cech revealed this weekend that Lampard is not the only man in the frame for the job and it’s clear that negotiations have not run as smoothly as the club would have hoped.

Derby have therefore given Lampard further time to speak to Chelsea as they’re yet to come to a resolution.

‘Derby County Football Club has excused Frank Lampard from reporting back for pre-season training on Monday and Tuesday to allow his discussions regarding a potential move to Chelsea to be concluded as soon as possible, a statement read.

‘The first few days of pre-season training will be focused on fitness training and will continue as planned under the guidance of the fitness, medical, conditioning and sports science teams at the club’s Training Centre.

‘On the assumption that Frank will reach an agreement with Chelsea to become their new manager, the club shall step up its efforts to find a replacement manager.’

Should Chelsea choose to appoint Lampard they will have to pay the Rams around £4m in compensation.

However, the Blues received around £5m after Juventus’ decision to appoint Maurizio Sarri.
