Dennis Bergkamp contacted fellow Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira to persuade him to sign Manchester United flop Donny van de Beek for Crystal Palace, according to reports.

The south London club are still working on a deal to bring Van de Beek, 24, to Selhurst Park for the rest of the 2021-22 season.

Van de Beek has endured a miserable spell at Old Trafford, scoring just two goals in 50 appearances since his £40m move from Ajax in the summer of 2020.

The Netherlands international has barely featured this season – starting just four games in all competitions – and wants to be granted the chance to revive his career elsewhere.

According to Sky Sports, Palace stepped up their interest in the Manchester United midfielder after Gunners hero Bergkamp – who is Van de Beek’s father-in-law – contacted his former team-mate Vieira to discuss a possible deal.

Red Devils interim boss Ralf Rangnick is ready to sanction Van de Beek’s departure but the club are looking to receive a loan fee and want his wages covered in full.

United will make a decision on Van de Beek’s long-term future at the end of the season but the Dutchman is said to feel let down by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who offered him assurances over game-time last summer.

Ex-England goalkeeper David James says ‘it’s just not happened’ for Van de Beek at Manchester United but has urged Crystal Palace to take a gamble on the player.

‘Under Ole, it hasn’t happened, under Rangnick it’s just not happening as well,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘At somewhere like Crystal Palace, where the level, and I say this respectfully, of success required wouldn’t be as high as at Manchester United, Donny van de Beek can go and develop into the player Manchester United wanted when they bought him.

‘I don’t doubt he can reproduce the kind of form he had in past seasons. So, for Crystal Palace, if it goes ahead I think, under Patrick Vieira, that would be a great signing.’

Van de Beek has already seen former Manchester United team-mate Anthony Martial secure a loan move away from Old Trafford during the January transfer window, while Jesse Lingard is also keen to complete a move before the deadline closes on Monday night.
