Demi Moore has told how she was raped aged 15 by a man who paid her mother $500 and asked what it was like to be “whored out”.
The actress told how, as a teenager, she was taken to bars by her alcoholic mum, Virginia King, to attract the attention of men.
She recalled how one day, she returned home to find an older man in their apartment after he was given a key.
Moore said he went on to rape her, later asking: “How does it feel to be whored out for $500?”
Appearing on the Good Morning America breakfast show yesterday to promote her new memoir Inside Out, the 56-year-old discussed some of the most harrowing details of her upbringing.
In her book, she says of the attack: “It was rape and a devastating betrayal.”
At one point she writes: “When I was younger, I was obligated to be of service. I wouldn’t be loved if I didn’t give of myself. My value was tied into my body.”
She said such self-destructive thoughts led her to abuse alcohol and cocaine and to monitor her weight obsessively.
Host Diane Sawyer asked Moore if she thought her mother had pimped her out.
She replied: “I think in my deep heart, no. I don’t think it was a straight forward transaction but she still did give him the access and put me in harm’s way.”
The Indecent Proposal star also recalls in her memoir how, when she was 12 years old, her mother first attempted suicide.
Moore writes: “I remember using my fingers to dig the pills my mother had tried to swallow out of her mouth.” Looking back, she concluded it was the “life-changing moment” that ended her childhood.
As well as reflecting on her early years, Moore recalled the troubles she had in her adult life.
She alleges she broke her 20-year sobriety when her ex-husband Ashton Kutcher told her he did not believe in alcoholism and said he pressured her into threesomes.
She said she agreed to do them because she wanted to seem “fun” but that they were a “mistake”.
Moore has been married three times – first to rock musician Freddy Moore, who she wed in 1979 when she was only 16 and he was 29.
She then married Bruce Willis in 1987 and had three children – Rumer, Scout and Tallulah. Moore and Kutcher divorced in 2013.
