Demi Moore hints that she changed herself to suit ex-husbands Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher

Demi Moore shared in an interview from Tuesday that she felt pressured to change herself to better fit with her boyfriend and husbands.

The 57-year-old Ghost star made the admission after she was asked how she recovered from three divorces on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show.

‘I think it’s a process of, not to sound cliché, but it’s really a process of learning to love yourself, accepting who you are just as you are,’ she advised other women in relationships.

Hard truth: Demi Moore, 57, admitted that she had 'changed' herself during each of her relationships 'to fit what I thought somebody else wanted' in an interview Tuesday on The Jess Cagle Show

‘For me, I changed myself over and over to fit what I thought somebody else wanted,’ Demi explained.

She also encouraged people to try to improve their relationships, but not at the expensive of their own needs.

‘Working through a relationship is really commendable in our disposable times,’ she continued. ‘To go through the journey of really honoring the love that brought you together in the first place, and to really give it all you’ve got, but you can’t do that without that love and acceptance of yourself.’

Demi was first married to musician Freddy Moore from 1981–85, from whom she took her last name.

She made a glamorous Hollywood couple with Bruce Willis, whom she married in 1997, though they were divorced in 2000.

The two remained friends and committed co-parents, however, and Bruce even quarantined with her and their adult children in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic.

Her most recent husband was That ’70s Show actor Ashton Kutcher, whom she married in 2005. The two finalized their divorce in 2013.

Later in the chat with Cagle and his co-host Julia Cunningham, Demi gave the late director Joel Schumacher credit for helping her to get sober.

‘I will forever be so grateful to him. As they say, somebody seeing more of you than you see yourself. And in a way, he was doing it for himself,’ she said. ‘He wasn’t yet sober. In a way, he was doing for me what he couldn’t do himself.’

Schumacher directed Moore in her first big feature the ‘Brat Pack’ film St. Elmo’s Fire, in which she starred with Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy and Emilio Estevez.

In an interview with Lena Dunham for Harper’s Bazaar in September, Demi explained her early exposure to drugs and alcohol through her mother’s own addiction.

She recounted a disturbing anecdote about trying to prevent her mother from choking after she overdosed.

‘The next thing I remember is using my fingers, the small fingers of a child, to dig the pills my mother had tried to swallow out of her mouth while my father held it open and told me what to do. Something very deep inside me shifted then, and it never shifted back. My childhood was over,’ she recounted.

Her own alcohol and drug abuse began in her late teenage years, but she achieved sobriety for decades after her substance use became a problem on St. Elmo’s Fire.

But after more than two decades clean, Demi began drinking again, first in moderation and gradually more, after her husband Ashton Kutcher downplayed the existence of alcohol addictions.

Demi described suffering a seizure in 2012 after smoking a kind of synthetic marijuana.

Despite the tumult with her mother, the two reconciled, and Demi helped care for her until her death from cancer at age 54.
