Deepika Padukone: 'I couldn't stop crying" xXx star reveals her lowest point

She is the highest-paid actress in India. She is adored by millions around the world. She is one of the few Bollywood stars to make an impact in Hollywood. She has been happily dating fellow star Ranveer Singh for over six years and they tied the knot last year. What could Deepika Padukone possibly have to feel sad about?

The actress has given a major new interview to Harper’s Bazaar.

She reveals she had a breakdown in 2014: “I just couldn’t stop crying. “

“(My mom) asked, ‘Is it your relationship? Is it your work?’ And I said, “No, no, no, none of those things.’ I just kept saying, ‘No, no, no. I don’t know. I don’t why I feel empty.'”

What happened next changed her life and she admitted: “I don’t think I’d be here today if it wasn’t for my mother.”

DEEPIKA PADUKONE: WHAT FRIGHTENED XXX STAR MOST

It was her mother, Ujjala, who told her she needed professional help, something which carries a stigma in many countries, including India.

Deepika said; “Typically, in an Indian family, we like to solve our problems internally.

“I had to deal with that stigma on my journey to recovery. Everyone, including me, was keeping it all so hushed. When people asked me how I was feeling, why did I always lie and say I was okay?

“I wasn’t aware of what mental illness was, and I didn’t realize the importance of mental health.

“When we have a fever, we know what the symptoms are. Why aren’t we taught to recognize the symptoms of mental illness in the same way? It was a lack of awareness on my part, but also on the part of the people around me. What if it wasn’t for my mother? Who else would have helped me?”

Deepika contacted family friend and mental health professional Anna Chandy.

In 2015 they went on national television to tell Deeepka’s story and raise awareness of the issue. Deepika went on to found The Live Love Laugh Foundation which lobbies in public and goes into schools to promote mental health and counters the stigma of seeking help.
