Debbie McGee: Strictly star reveals what Bruce Forsyth thought of Paul Daniels

Debbie McGee, 60, recently reflected on Paul Daniels’ legendary TV game show during an interview with comedian and fellow quiz enthusiast Lucy Porter, 46, on The Debbie McGee show. The Strictly Come Dancing contestant shared that the icon behind The Generation Game, Bruce Forsyth, believed her late husband’s work on Every Second Counts was “the best”. According to Debbie, Bruce, who passed away aged 89 in August 2017, praised her other half for his hosting skills on the programme. The star first got onto the subject after Lucy complimented the former magician’s work on Wipeout.

She said: “Of course, Paul’s Wipeout was one of the all time great quiz shows, I absolutely loved Wipeout.”

Debbie then responded: “Thank you, now he did two before that, the first quiz show he did was Odd One Out, then Every Second Counts and then Wipeout.

“And all the other quiz masters like Bruce Forsyth and everybody all said, as a quiz, Every Second Counts was the best because of the way it built.”

The radio presenter then revealed that she was “surprised” the popular show hadn’t returned to screens as a remake.

She continued: “I’m surprised they’ve never brought it back.”

Lucy agreed: “Well they do bring back so many shows like sitcoms, they’re always trying to regurgitate them, and I think some of those old quiz formats should come back.”

Elsewhere, Debbie discussed Paul’s death on BBC Radio Berkshire, informing fans about how she celebrated their wedding anniversary and his birthday earlier this month.

She admitted: “This week was a happy and sad week, in that Tuesday would have been my wedding anniversary.

“And yesterday would have been Paul’s birthday. But I did things to remember him by. I think that’s the way to go about it.”

The couple got married in 1988 and were together until Paul sadly died at the age of 77 due to a brain tumour in 2016.

Paul would have celebrated his 80th birthday on April 6 this year.

Debbie candidly went on to recall how she commemorated the occasions, divulging: “And I was just telling Rob, yesterday I did go out to lunch with my family to celebrate Paul’s birthday.

“And then I came home and I spent hours, literally sorting through all the DVDs of our BBC magic shows, which is 147.

“I put them all in chronological order on the shelves in the office.

“From one to 147, which doesn’t sound much but they were all over the place so I had to hunt for them.

“And I had loads of duplicates. But you know – it was really cathartic.”

The former magician’s assistant concluded: “I didn’t watch any but just doing something to remember him by. I don’t know, it felt a good thing to do.”
