Dear Coleen: I can’t forgive my paralytic sister for wrecking my wedding day

Dear Coleen

I got married a few weeks ago to an amazing man and we are incredibly happy. But he’s not the problem.

Sadly, our wedding day was ruined by my younger sister who got very drunk and made a spectacle of herself, swearing at guests and throwing herself around the party.

She was very rude to a number of the guests and ended up being carried back to her hotel room, barely conscious. Needless to say, she had a horrific hangover the next morning and didn’t surface until the afternoon, missing a celebration breakfast.

I was so upset the day I’d been planning for so long was spoiled by her selfishness. She’s always been a bit of a loose cannon and a drama queen, but this was impressive, even for her. She’s quite recently single and has also been struggling to find a job she can stick at, so I think those things played a part.

I haven’t talked to her since getting back from honeymoon a fortnight ago, I’m still so angry with her. I feel she’s stolen my memories from me.

How should I handle this?

Coleen says

Oh, let it go. OK, she made an idiot of herself, but I’m sure your actual wedding ceremony was beautiful and perfect. Don’t let her spoil things by wasting any more time dwelling on her behaviour, which I’m sure was only a small part of the day.

You’ve married a great guy and things are going well for you so perhaps your sister is a little envious. Maybe think about why she got that drunk.

I’m not trying to excuse her behaviour, but there will be a reason for it. There’s always someone who gets plastered at a wedding. How many have you been to where someone gets carried out?

At my wedding to Ray, my friend got carried out after missing five cabs and she nearly killed my elderly mother-in-law (who walks with a stick) by grabbing her on the dancefloor for an energetic jive. Just tell your sister you don’t want to fall out with her, but she needs to know you’re annoyed about what happened. I’m sure she knows she’s messed up and will want to make amends.
