De Ligt's possible transfer to Man Utd – and why it solves huge problem at club

Matthijs de Ligt was on Manchester United’s radar in the summer transfer window.

At the time, the Dutchman was at Ajax and was widely considered to be one of the hottest young prospects in world football.

A bidding war got underway with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Juventus all fighting for his signature.

And in the end it was the Serie A club who won the race, with De Ligt desperate to play alongside a hero of his: Cristiano Ronaldo.

De Ligt’s first season in Italy hasn’t entirely gone to plan, with the centre-back struggling to make an impact and thus settle in at Juventus.

The 20-year-old has made just 15 league starts this campaign, and is often overlooked in favour of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

His lack of game time has resulted in Manchester United keeping close tabs on the centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

United did splash serious cash on Harry Maguire in the summer, but would like to add another world-class centre-back to their roster, with Kalidou Koulibaly also in the mix.

De Ligt fits the bill of the type of player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been looking to sign in recent transfer windows in that he’s young and boasts bags of potential.

A possible transfer may also fix another problem at the club: that of Paul Pogba.

De Ligt shares the same agent as the Frenchman, Mino Raiola, who was had an up-and-down relationship with the Red Devils in recent years.

Pogba looks almost certain to leave United in the summer and the two clubs most regularly linked with him are Juventus and Real Madrid.

Should United ramp up their interest in De Ligt, then a swap deal may well be on the cards, which would get the World Cup winner off the Red Devils’ books – and more importantly their pay role.

The mega-transfer would also be very profitable for Raiola.

Pogba has been out of action for the majority of this season with an injury, but United haven’t missed him since January.

It was in this month that the club brought in Bruno Fernandes, who has sparked an upturn in form and results.
