He spilled Antonio Rudiger’s shot against the Blues on Sunday which allowed Marcos Alonso to score and draw Chelsea level at 1-1.

The gaffe – which comes as speculation over his future and a summer transfer mounts – all but ended United’s Champions League hopes.

But the 28-year-old quickly apologised to his Red Devils team-mates, getting it in before boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer began his half-time team talk.

An Old Trafford source said: “He held his hands up at half-time and said sorry to the guys and said he had f***ed up.

“He could not believe he had done it and was absolutely gutted. He felt like he had let the whole team and Ole down.

“The boss told him to forget about it and focus on the second-half which he did and made a couple of good saves.

“David was very down after the match and got dressed pretty quickly and quietly before leaving to go home.”

De Gea is struggling at United, with insiders at the club revealing he has had a “face like a slapped a***” around their Carrington training complex.

The ex-Atletico Madrid man has failed to agree a new long-term contract, with United unwilling to meet his £350,000-a-week demands.

He has also been lined up by PSG and Juventus for £60m transfer.
