Davina McCall recalls being rushed to hospital after drug overdose


Davina McCall has reflected on her lowest point at the height of her addiction struggles and recalled being rushed to hospital while suffering an overdose.

The celebrated 52-year-old television presenter went through a dark period of life at the start of her career where she was addicted to the class A drug heroin and also smoked cannabis.

Speaking at an International Women’s Day event, the star revealed that a brush acted as the wake-up call she needed to turn her life around.

After taking a cocktail of drugs, Davina – who has been clean for 25 years – found herself waking up in a hospital bed and realised she had to clean up her act, or face an early grave.

Davina explained that she started dabbling with cannabis before turning to heroin – and explained she would party as a teenager as her complicated relationship with her mother left her feeling like she had nothing else to turn to.

Her addictions reached their worst point when she was hospitalised.

“It was very frightening as it was a very gradual overdose. I’d had a cocktail of drugs, because I didn’t want to feel normal,” she told an audience, according to The Sun.

“I was constantly trying to escape myself — I was like a piece of fruit rotting from the inside,” she said.

“So then I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just take a valium’, and the next thing I knew I woke up in hospital. At my lowest point, when I was filled with self hatred, it was literally a case of ‘get clean, or die’,” she said.

The Masked Singer judge revealed that her best friend, her father, and her stepmother helped her come to terms with her addiction and helped her make the decision to attend Narcotics Anonymous.

”I’ve had to be very honest about my past with the children – especially now they have access to the internet.,” she told the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast in 2018.

“Actually, I had to be brutally honest quite early on when I thought other kids might talk to them about it. They grew up with ‘Mummy’s going to a meeting’ – they just didn’t know it was a Narcotics Anonymous meeting,” she said.

“They were all really very accepting. They’d say, ‘We thought it was something like that. Is that why you don’t drink?’” she said.
