David Walliams' Caroline Flack joke 'backfires' as NTAs audience refuse to laugh

David Walliams hosted this year’s National Television Awards, but one of his jokes struck a bum note with the audience.

The BGT judge took a swipe at Caroline Flack, who stepped down from her role as Love Island presenter late last year.

At tonight’s award ceremony, David quipped about the 40-year-old’s absence from the screen.

It all kicked off when he was joined by The Masked Singer‘s The Hedgehog, who came onstage with Joel Dommett to present an award.

After they exited the stage, David said: “Thank you, Joel, and so nice to see Caroline Flack back on TV as well.”

The audience understood the remark as a dig made against the former Love Island star and remained silent.

Once viewers heard the comment, they took to Twitter to point out that the joke had “backfired”, noticing the tumbleweeds throughout London’s O2 arena.

One said: “Well David’s joke about Caroline Flack backfired.”

A second claimed: “Walliams just made a joke about Caroline Flack and someone from the audience shouted ‘shut up’.”

And a third remarked: “That was bang out of order what David has just said about Caroline.”

Caroline was arrested in her London home last December

Piers Morgan got involved in the drama, saying: “Walliams’ nasty little dig at Caroline Flack went down like a lead balloon.

“A bit like his entire hosting performance tonight.”
