David Moyes wants long-term commitment by Everton rather than end-of-season saving job to return as Toffees boss

DAVID MOYES has told Everton he wants a long-term commitment from them before he agrees to return to the club.

Moyes has held talks with Everton about going back to Goodison Park to save the club from dropping out of the Premier League.

The 56-year-old would relish the challenge of having a second spell in charge of the Toffees after the club sacked Marco Silva, with the team languishing in the bottom three of the Premier League.

But he has made it clear to owner Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright that he does not want to be appointed as an interim boss until the end of the season.

Moyes wants Everton to buy into his vision for building a new squad capable of challenging the top six clubs, and to give him the chance to complete that project.

The Scot had his fingers burned by his experience at West Ham when he took the job on an initial six-month basis, saved the club from relegation, only to be axed that summer.

Now he wants to avoid a repeat scenario, and is asking Moshiri to give him the backing he needs – both in terms of time and funds.

Moyes has been at pains to point out how he led Everton to a string of top half finishes despite operating on a largely shoestring budget compared to other sides.

At the same time he also nurtured young talent through from the academy such as Wayne Rooney and Jack Rodwell.

Silva was given the boot on Thursday evening after Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat at Man Utd left Everton in the relegation zone.

A club statement confirmed: “Everton can confirm that manager Marco Silva has left the club.

“Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, chairman Bill Kenwright and the board of directors would like to thank Marco for his service over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future.

“Duncan Ferguson has taken temporary charge of the first team and will manage the side for the game against Chelsea on Saturday.

“The club aims to confirm a new permanent manager as swiftly as possible.”
