David Luiz’s contract situation to be ‘resolved this week’ along with ‘structural issues’ at Arsenal, says agent

David Luiz’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, expects the centre-back’s future to “be resolved this week” along with “structural issues” at Arsenal.

After the Brazilian’s calamitous performance against Manchester City on Wednesday, where he was culpable for Raheem Sterling’s opener before receiving a straight red card for dragging down Riyad Mahrez in the penalty area, he admitted that uncertainty over his future has had a destabilising impact.

Luiz’s current contract expires on 30 June after Arsenal’s option to extend the deal expired. Speaking on TalkSport on Thursday morning, Joorabchian insisted the 33-year-old’s future will be finalised in the coming days.

“The contract situation has dragged on not because of the will of David or Arsenal to finalise but really the situation that has occurred with the pandemic… the situation from Arsenal’s point of view will be resolved this week,” he said.

“The situation from Arsenal’s point of view will be resolved this week. Not just David Luiz’s situation. There are several issues within the whole structure that will be resolved.”

After yesterday’s 3-0 defeat, Luiz admitted that he was solely to blame for the result.

“It’s not the team’s fault, it was my fault,” he told Sky Sports. “The team did well, especially with 10 men. The coach is amazing. I love being here and that’s why I continue to train hard and why I came here [to be interviewed] to show my face. I want to stay, the coach knows, he wants me to stay so we are waiting for the decisions.”

“I should have taken a different decision in the last two months but I didn’t. All about my contract, if I stay here or not. I have 14 days to be here and that’s it. I should have tried to decide my future as early as possible, but I didn’t. I don’t want to use that as an alibi or excuse, it’s my fault – that’s it. I love to be here.”
