David James speaks out about ‘Strictly curse’ as he reveals his true goal

The retired footballer shrugged off the idea of the “Strictly curse”, saying the BBC One contest is “not Love Island”. David, 49, and Nadiya, 30, are hoping to avoid being in the bottom two for a third week after quickstepping to From Now On from The Greatest Showman last night. Of chemistry, he said: “If that’s what it looks like, we’re happy. Nadiya wants to win this competition as much as I do.”

He added: “Nadiya’s a fantastic teacher, I want to be a fantastic student, but we’re on Strictly – not Love Island or some other show where people get together.”

David, who has twice faced the dance-off, joked that he was not “desperate” but admitted: “I just want us to perform at a better level than we’ve done before.”

Meanwhile, Strictly: It Takes Two host Rylan Clark-Neal is calling for same-sex couples to be allowed to compete.

He said: “I think people should be able to dance with whoever they want to dance with, same sex, different sex. If you want to dance with a penguin – go for it!”
