David Haye reacts to Deontay Wilder’s weight gain for Tyson Fury rematch

David Haye thinks Deontay Wilder’s weight gain is an attempt to deal with Tyson Fury’s dirty boxing after coming off second best in that department in their first fight.

Wilder tipped the scales at his career-heaviest weight, 231lbs, over 16lbs more than what he weighed for his first fight with Fury in 2018.

Fury was also heavier at 273lbs, but Haye thinks Wilder’s weight gain could be an advantage for the defending WBC champion.

He told BT Sport: ‘I’ve never seen him so heavy before. He was knocking people out at about 15 stone.

‘If by putting on this additional muscle, he maybe thinks that will give him a bit more durability in the clinches, when it gets rough and tough, up close.

‘It looked like last time he came off second best in the inside exchanges. An extra stone of muscle I don’t think will be a bad thing.’

Fury was expected to come in heavier for the rematch and will weigh three stone more than Wilder on fight night.

The Gypsy King has vowed to knock out Wilder, but Lennox Lewis claimed Fury’s performance would not be affected by his weight.

He said: ‘Deontay was sick before the first fight and he came in light.

‘So this one they wanted him to come in heavier this time.

‘As for Tyson Fury, he can fight at any weight, he could put on 19 more stones.

‘At this weight I think he feels comfortable it’s not like he had a dramatic weight increase. He’s been training at this weight for the last few months.’
