Manchester United will be sweating over David de Gea’s fitness after the goalkeeper limped out of Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifier with an injury.

De Gea played an hour of Spain’s 1-1 draw with Sweden on Tuesday night and could not keep out Marcus Berg’s scrappy goal just ten minutes before he was forced off in Stockholm.

Rodrigo found a dramatic equaliser in injury time as Spain secured qualification for next summer’s tournament with two games to spare in Group F.

De Gea appearing to tweak a muscle in his leg while clearing the ball in the 60th minute before immediately dropping to the ground in pain.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper appeared in some discomfort as he eventually made his way off the pitch alongside two members of Spain’s medical staff.

Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga came on in place of United’s number one for the remainder of the match.

De Gea was making his first start under Robert Moreno after Arrizabalaga was dropped for a costly mistake against Norway at the weekend.

The sight of De Gea hobbling off the field at the Friends Arena will no doubt be a worry for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with United preparing to face Premier League leaders Liverpool this weekend.

Should De Gea be ruled out of the clash, Sergio Romero will likely come into the side at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Asked about De Gea’s injury, Spain manager Moreno said: ‘He had pain in the abductor muscle but he received treatment at half-time and wanted to keep playing.

‘He gave us his word, but in the end he couldn’t continue.’
