David De Gea apologised to Manchester United fans after his latest howler against Chelsea at Old Trafford this afternoon.

The Spaniard spilled Antonio Rudiger’s shot from 30 yards, allowing Marcos Alonso to score a crucial equaliser.

United’s draw all but ended their chances of finishing in the top four and they’re now relying on Chelsea and Arsenal both to slip up to give them any chance of Champions League qualification.

De Gea’s error was his third in the last four matches and he’s made more mistakes this season that have led to goals than in his previous five Premier League campaigns put together.

The United faithful stuck by De Gea as he left the field at half-time and applauded the Spaniard as he made his way to the tunnel.

And De Gea made his feelings clear to the Stretford End by apologising to the crowd as he made his way in by raising an arm to the crowd.

The Spaniard is entering the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and the club have made little progress in negotiations over a new deal.

De Gea wants parity with top earner Alexis Sanchez to stay at the Theatre of Dreams but the club are unwilling to have two players on such high salaries.
