David Berman dead: Iconic Silver Jews singer dies aged 52 days before his new tour in US


The indie rock musician’s cause of death has not yet been released but it was confirmed by his Drag City label. Mr Berman has been expected to partake in a North American tour this beginning this weekend to promote tracks from Purple Mountains’ new eponymous album. He graduated from the University of Virginia and in 1989 moved to Hoboken, New Jersey with Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich where they formed Silver Jews.

 

Drag City wrote: “David Berman passed away earlier today. A great friend and one of the most inspiring individuals we’ve ever known is gone.

“Rest easy, David.”

As reported by the Daily Star, Mr Berman made six studio albums with Silver Jews and became an established poet.

Silver Jews, which also featured his wife Cassie on bass broke up in 2009.

The band embarked on their first world tour in 2006 and their shows in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem were subject of the “Silver Jew” documentary film.

Mr Berman spent almost a decade out of the music industry until he co-produced Yonatan Gat album “Universalists” last year.

In May, his new band Purple Mountains released a single called “All My Happiness is Gone”.

Their first album was released last month.

Mr Berman and his wife are now separated.

The former couple are believed to still own a house in Nashville.

Mr Berman say there was “no inciting incident” for the split.

At the time of his death, he lived in Chicago.
