David Beckham says he slept against bedroom door when son Brooklyn was born because he was ‘so worried someone was going to come in’

David Beckham has revealed that he used to sleep with his head against the door of his son Brooklyn’s bedroom after he was born as a measure of fatherly protection.

According to the former football player, he slept against the now-20-year-old’s door because he feared someone would break in to their home and hurt him.

The 44-year-old, who shares sons Romeo, 16, Cruz, 14, and daughter Harper, seven, with wife Victoria Beckham, discussed becoming a father and how it has changed him with his own dad Ted ahead of Father’s Day for a short film series by Haig Club Whisky celebrating fatherhood.

“When you actually become a parent, it changes you in so many different ways,” Beckham said. “I remember the moment when Brooklyn was born, I slept with my head against the door because I was so worried that someone was going to come in.

“I don’t think that ever changes, you always worry about them.”

Beckham’s father agreed, reiterating that worrying is a “part of being parents,” before adding: “What I’m chuffed about with your boys is how polite they are.”

During the conversation, the football star and whisky ambassador also discussed the importance of being a present parent, revealing that he likes to take his children to school every morning.

According to Beckham, being present in his children’s lives is behaviour he learned from his own dad growing up.

“The moment I got home from school, I’d turn around to you and say: ‘Let’s go to the park’ or ‘Let’s go out in the garden’. And you never said no to me,” Beckham recalled of his father’s parenting.

The conversation was filmed at The Lore Of The Land pub in Fitzrovia, London, as part of Haig Club’s Make Your Own Rules campaign.

Earlier this month, Beckham’s parenting choices were scrutinised after Victoria posted an Instagram video of him kissing Harper on the lips during a family boating trip in Miami.

At the time, Piers Morgan called the kiss “creepy” and “weird” on Good Morning Britain, sparking a parenting debate about appropriate boundaries.
