David Beckham 'makes contact with Lionel Messi' over sensational MLS switch

David Beckham has ‘made contact’ with Lionel Messi over a sensational move to join his new MLS franchise, according to a report in Spain.

Barcelona-based Catalunya Radio claim the England legend has reached out to Messi and regarding a “huge deal” to spearhead Inter Miami.

Beckham’s new club will enter the MLS in March 2020 whilst details regarding Messi’s Barcelona deal recently emerged which allow him to leave the club for free in June.

But whilst it is claimed the remarkable move is viewed as “interesting” by the Argentinian, his advisors have reportedly quoted huge demands which could rule out the move.

Barcelona’s directors are said to be aware of the interest as Beckham looks for a big name to be the face of the franchise in their formative years.

Speculation has emerged surrounding Messi’s future after it came to light he has a clause in his deal which would allow him to leave at the end of the season.

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu confirmed the clause but downplayed the chances of their superstar leaving amid reports they plan to offer him a lifetime contract.

Bartomeu said: “I doubt he’d want to play for another club, but he has earned liberty over his future,” Bartomeu said. “He’s a big Barca fan and I have no doubt he’ll want to continue until 2021 and we hope another year too.”

Beckham admitted to having a “wish list” when discussing Inter Miami earlier this year, although he admitted the likes of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could be unrealistic targets at their current level.

“Everyone has their wish list,” Beckham said.

“But if you look at the way Leo and Cristiano are still playing, even at what you might think is the later stage of their careers, I don’t see it ending for them.

“They’re playing at such a high level that it’s hard to see them leaving the clubs they are at. But we will see. You never know what can happen in football.”
