David Baddiel has shared the news that his dad Colin died on Tuesday evening after being diagnosed with dementia.

The comedian, 57, shared a throwback picture of Colin wrapping his arms around a young David at the beach, and thanked his supporters for their ‘unbelievably lovely messages.’

He wrote: ‘My dad Colin Baddiel died earlier tonight. Thank so much to all of you who sent unbelievably lovely messages about him in response to all my posts over the years. He leaves a huge hole in my sky.’

Colin was cared for at home as residential homes refused to take him due to the behaviour he displayed.

David and his brother Ivor produced a Channel 4 documentary called The Trouble With Dad in 2017, which explored how they both cared for Colin.

After announcing his father’s death, the comedian was met with support from broadcaster Piers Morgan, who wrote: ‘Oh no. So sorry to hear this, David. He seemed such a wonderful character and I loved your relationship. RIP Colin.’

TV chef Nigella Lawson also shared a message of condolence, as she wrote:’ Oh David, I’m so very sorry. Sending love.’

‘So sorry for your loss David x,’ tweeted comedian Sarah Millican, while author Jojo Moyes said: ‘I’m so sorry David x.’

In a second tweet, David expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of love he received, saying that it ‘helps’.

‘Thanks so much for all your incredible messages of support. It all so helps. I’d like to also thank while I’m here @bowles_clive, Sandra Wiseman and all the other amazing carers who helped look after my dad for the last seven years,’ he wrote.

David previously explained his decision to make the Channel 4 documentary on his dad, writing in a blog post for Alzheimer’s Research UK: ‘What happened when my dad got Pick’s disease was a kind of cartooning of self, an exaggeration of who he’d always been.’

In December 2020 David shared how worried he was when Colin was admitted into hospital due to a problem with his ‘catheter.’

He tweeted: ‘So my dad’s had to be rushed to hospital due to a weird fuck-up with his catheter that I won’t go into, but, still, no-one can go with him, and A&E don’t pick up the phone.

‘So. Basically, you just have to hope that he’s not just lying on a trolley somewhere. Sorry to be bleak.’
