The Marvel Cinematic Universe has well and truly taken over the film industry but don’t write the X-Men off just yet.

In fact, Michael Fassbender and Sophie Turner believe the X-Men stand out from the crowd exactly because they are the misfits who don’t fit in.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk ahead of the release of Dark Phoenix, Oscar winner Michael said: ‘I think the fact that they are, because their powers aren’t obvious, so at the centre of of it all they are disenfranchised misfits who don’t feel included in society for whatever reason, and that’s a human element, and that’s what has interested me’.

‘It was borne in the civil rights era and there’s a lot of this in the stories; our first kick off note was Charles is Martin Luther Jr and Eric is a Malcolm X character.’

Sophie, who joined the series in 2016’s X-Men Apocalypse added: ‘There is still so much room for exploration of other characters and their background stories and I would be excited to see Storm’s origin and Quicksilver’s origins.

‘I would love a Quicksilver movie, that would be awesome, there are so many avenues’.

Dark Phoenix tells the acclaimed comic book story of how Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into the person she had tried so hard to suppress.

Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, and Alexandra Shipp all also return as Quicksilver, Storm and Cyclops, and Tye acknowledges that although the Disney takeover of Fox makes the potential for more stories ‘exciting’ he hasn’t particularly thought about his own standalone.

‘I don’t know if I’ve thought about it,’ he says.

‘I don’t know. There are so many great characters in this franchise, each could have their spin off and it would be exciting and compelling as long as there are great messages, I am on board for whatever people are down to it in the future.’

Alexandra however, has definitely thought about it: ‘I would love to see Halle [Berry] go back to the past, and her and I team up and face a baddie, doesn’t that sound so much fun?

‘Plus, I really love Halle Berry and I want to smell her hair.’

Dark Phoenix is out in the UK on 5 June.
