Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance boss exposes gory scene cut from Netflix series

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance brings viewers back to the much-loved world of Thra.

Acting as a prequel to the cult-classic film The Dark Crystal from 1982, Age of Resistance dives deeper into the lore and history of the world Jim Henson built almost three decades ago.

One of the most notable aspects of the show is the constant sense of fear set in a high fantasy world much like the original film.

Despite the entire cast being made up of puppets, the series provides some amount of body horror, which will no doubt leave viewers of all ages feeling a little queasy.

One particular event sees The Scientist (played by Mark Hamill) being tortured by The Emperor (Jason Isaacs).

This interaction sees The Scientist being strapped into a nomadic helmet which traps his head and neck from moving.

A creature is then injected into the contraption, which goes on to attack The Scientist’s eye – eventually ripping his eyelids open and eating the eyeball.

This gruesome affair may have seemed quite horrific itself, without much blood or gore but the show’s creators have now revealed how the scene which made it into the second episode of the show was tamer than the one initially designed.

When asked about the scene in question Lisa Henson couldn’t help but laugh.

She revealed: “Oh yeah we have three different cuts of that.”

“And the mildest one is the one we used!”

The topic of the eye scene came up during a discussion about fear in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and whether younger viewers would feel ready for it.

Fortunately, Halle Stanford – executive producer of the show, and TV President of the Jim Henson Company – believes children will enjoy the prequel.

She explained: “I think children are very sophisticated. I think they’re used to – in their fairytales – darkness.”

Addressing the eye-gouging scene, however, she went on: “I hear you. There are some moments that… do we cross a line?

“I was just recalling when I was a child I watched some faces melt in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

“Yes, there was that moment [in the film] – and I do think we have those moments too.

“But I do think kids and their families will understand, perhaps, there are trying times. In characters’ lives there is darkness.”

Fans of the Dark Crystal are going to feel right at home with the prequel show, as teased by the show’s synopsis, which reads: “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all-new adventure.

“When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is available on Netflix now.
