Darcey Bussell: What is Darcey Bussell doing now? The real reason she left Strictly


Strictly Come Dancing is back now after the first live show aired last night (Saturday, September 21) but there was one face missing from te show. Former Prima Ballerina Darcey Bussell announced back in April that she would be leaving after seven years. Darcey, 50, has been a judge since 2012 sitting next to Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Shirley Ballas. Motsi Mabuse, who is also the sister to Strictly professional Oti, was announced as her replacement.

What is Darcey Bussell doing now?

Darcey took to social media earlier this year to share news of her departure.

In a statement to her 173,000 Twitter followers, she said: “It has been a complete privilege for me to be part of Strictly for the past seven years, working with such a talented team.

“I have enjoyed every minute of my time and will miss everyone from my fellow judges, the presenters, the dancers, the musicians, the entire backstage team, and especially the viewers of the show, who have been so supportive.

“I am not leaving because of any upset or disagreement at all.

“I am just stepping away to give more focus to my many other commitments in dance, after seven truly wonderful years that I can’t imagine having gone any better.

“I know I will miss being part of this unique show, and the fact that it celebrates dance is something I am so passionate about.”

She added: “I hope that I may be very lucky to be asked again one day. Darcey x.”

The BBC’s Director of Content, Charlotte Moore also made a statement amid the departure, saying: “It has been an absolute honour to have Darcey, a national treasure and British dance icon, bring her passion for dance and her graceful presence to the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel for seven consecutive years.

“She will be thoroughly missed by us all and will, of course, remain part of the Strictly family in the future.”

Motsi was later unveiled as the new judge in July following much speculation with some reports suggesting veteran dancer Anton Du Beke could become a judge.

Since waltzing away from Strictly, Darcey has been busy on a whole host of projects.

She was recently photographed on the set of the film Coppelia in period garb.

Under the photo, Darcey said: “Enjoying my time working with @tedbrandsen and @vitomazzeo onset of the new Coppelia film working with Submarine products and the gorgeous Dutch National Ballet. Dx #coppeliafilm #dutchnationalballet #coppeliamovie.”

Darcey is also the President of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and has been focusing on her position there.

She recently posted on Twitter about her work at Rad, tweeting: “Working behind the scenes in my role of President at the @RADheadquarters – making sure everyone has the opportunity to dance. Dx #RADawardsday.”

From her Instagram account, it’s clear Darcey has been busy with a myriad of projects and has even been to the Royal Opera House to coach young talent as well as encouraging people to keep active as part of National Fitness Day.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One next Saturday at 6.40pm
