Danny Murphy hailed Mason Mount after Chelsea’s hard-fought victory over Watford and said the England star ‘never disappoints’.

Mount scored his 20th goal for the Blues to put Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead at Vicarage Road on Wednesday night.

Watford scored a deserved equaliser through in-form Emmanuel Dennis but European champions Chelsea, who were far from at their best, secured the three points thanks to Hakim Ziyech’s second-half winner.

Mount also played a part in Ziyech’s goal and Murphy said after the 2-1 win that he is a player that ‘never disappoints’.

Analysing the game on BBC’s Match of the Day, Murphy said: ‘Mount never does [disappoint]. He’s got that quality and that desire to keep getting into dangerous areas.

‘They’ve got lots of quality players but it was great to see him back. You know what you get from him.

‘You get a great touch, great technique and that willingness to get into areas. He’s always a threat.

‘Chelsea were poor first half but they only needed one or two chances. Mount very rarely makes the wrong decision.

‘He was pivotal in the winner for Ziyech too. He’s actually been the top scorer since Tuchel came in and he’ll be delighted to have him back.’

While Chelsea recorded their tenth league win of the season to stay top of the table, manager Tuchel was less than impressed by his side’s peformance.

‘That’s not us. We were absolutely not ready today for this match,’ he said.

‘I missed maybe to find the right approach to make my team ready. We did not cope with the pressure, with the first ball, second ball.

‘We had a lot of changes but too many faults. It did not get better. The only thing we could do was hang in there and focus on the easy things. It was a lucky win.’

With Liverpool and Manchester City both winning on Wednesday night, Chelsea remain just one point clear at the top of the table. Tuchel’s side face West Ham on Saturday.
