Daniel Craig laughed at the suggestion his portrayal of James Bond may be the ‘least horny’ in 007 history, as he attended a Q&A for his 2006 film Casino Royale.
As we all eagerly anticipate the release of the next film in the Bond franchise, No Time To Die – and Daniel’s last spin as the suited and booted spy – the actor was on hand to answer questions about his time as Bond.
While also celebrating his 52nd, birthday, naturally.
Taking in the sights of New York City’s Museum of Modern Art on Tuesday night for the screening, Daniel held a captive audience as he sported a smart suit for the festivities, which marked the launch of an exhibition about the actor, In Character: Daniel Craig.
However, things took a rather x-rated turn when, speaking about a moment in Casino Royale, MoMA’s chief curator of film, Rajendra Roy, suggested Daniel’s Bond ‘may be the least horny Bond’.
Well we never!
Daniel laughed at the suggestion, as Rajendra qualified: ‘Sex is there, he’s an exquisite flirt!’
Still, the host wanted to know Daniel’s thoughts on taking the ‘classic bond trope’ in a new direction.
‘A lot of thought goes on behind this, clearly, but I wanted to explode some of the things that had gone on before…’ Daniel continued. ‘I did want to make the characters of the women mean something and it was very important to lift that…and hopefully, something we’ve done through the [movies] managed to do that.’
He added: ‘…[sex] was part of it, sex is definitely closely related…everybody is a bit turned on by all of this [in the original books]…we didn’t want to get rid of that, we wanted the movies to be sexy.
‘But it wasn’t the go-to, there was the twist to it, something pushed it away, he falls in love, he’s heartbroken, all if these things are allowed.’
At the end of the chat, the star, who celebrated his birthday on 2 March, was presented with a pretty special, and no doubt delicious, James Bond-themed birthday cake which sported 007 on it, with the cake designed to look like a swish tuxedo.
It comes just a few weeks before the scheduled 2 April release date for No Time To Die, with fans calling for the release to be delayed amid the coronavirus threat.
No Time To Die is scheduled for release in UK cinemas 2 April.
