Dani Ceballos has apologised to Arsenal fans after missing the decisive penalty during the Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool.

Arsenal led 2-1 and 4-2 at Anfield on Wednesday night as Premier League leaders Liverpool fought back to level the match at 5-5 and send the tie to penalties.

Liverpool converted all five of their spot-kicks and Caoimhin Kelleher denied Arsenal’s Real Madrid loanee Ceballos to send the Gunners crashing out of the competition.

Breaking his silence after the penalty miss, Ceballos said: ‘I will never stop failing for not trying. I will never hide for fearing a failure.

‘If I would have today the opportunity, I would assume the responsibility without a doubt.

‘I am sorry for my supporters, but I want you to know that I will give my soul for this team.’

Unai Emery, meanwhile, insisted he was ‘proud’ of his much-changed Arsenal team despite their collapse on Merseyside.

‘It was a crazy match,’ the Gunners boss said. ‘I am very proud of [the players’ work], we had a high rhythm in the first 45 minutes.

‘At the end we were winning until the last action. Penalties are 50/50 and we lost. We are sad but our work, we deserve to have more.

‘There are lots of positives to take. Defensively, both teams cannot be happy with that. But for the supporters it was an amazing 90 minutes.

‘The result was always changing. It was spectacular.’

Arsenal return to Premier League action on Saturday when Wolves visit the Emirates.
